Bee seein' ya, Blind Melon - "Blind Melon"
Twenty years ago today, Blind Melon dropped their debut album and radios everywhere began playing its only hit single “no rain.” Personally, I dig the song. It’s one of those tunes you gotta sing along to when it comes on. But let’s face it, nobody needs to hear it ever again.
The big footnote on the Blind Melon story is the drug overdose of leadsinger Shannon Hoon,...

Stop! (GUNSHOT), Bobby Brown - "Bobby"
Bobby Brown’s third studio album “Bobby” expires today. This twice platinum record features the one and only “Humpin’ Around.” He’s got two records still in play including the humbly titled “The Masterpiece” which dropped in June of this year.

all-shook-up asked: Elvis deserves more than ANYONE to be celebrated. He worked so hard for everything he got in life. He IS the king because he deserves it. He will ALWAYS be the king. You tell me what other artist has that many fans? That many fans after 35 years? He has fans from age 90 to 5. So what if it's been 35 years? When someone you love dies do NOT tell me you will not mourn over it and remember them....

Elvis in one.
Just a reminder, Elvis’ music is old. If my math is correct, the king died 35 years ago today. His last studio album Moody Blue was released just months before his death. We should’ve crowned a new king fifteen years ago. Somebody get on that.

Hit the coat check, Barenaked Ladies - "Gordon"
100% expired, Sonic Youth - "Dirty"
With today’s disposal of “Dirty,” half of Sonic Youth’s catalog is kaput. You’ve still got eight more studio albums to enjoy. “Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star” won’t expire until ‘14.

EM remembers Jon Lord
Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord passed away today at 71. He was an active and long-time member of the band until 1998 with his last Deep Purple release “Abandon” (Exp. ‘18).*
Deep Purple has five more albums in play. “The Battle Rages on…” expires in July of next year.
Lord was also the keyboardist for “White Snake” from 1978-1984. White Snake...

zero, Megadeth - "Countdown to Extinction"
Megadeth’s fifth and most famous record “Countdown to Extinction” has expired. They still have 8 records in play including last year’s release “Thirteen” (exp. 2031).
July 14th, 1992 was a pretty big day for Metal heads. We’re also losing:
Danzig III: How the Gods Kill
and…
Ministry’s “Psalm 69: The way to Succeed and the Way to...

There goes Emerson, Lake & Palmer - "Black Moon"
Hey, guess what. Emerson, Lake and Palmer’s “Black Moon” expires today. Do you care? I don’t. ELP has released twelve records and yet their most famous song, “Lucky Man” appeared on their debut album in 1970.*
ELP has two records still in play: “The Return of the Manticore (exp. ‘13) & “In the Hot Seat” (exp. ‘14)

New Music: Thoughts Detecting Machines - “Pouring Sun”
Here’s the first song from a six-track record by Rick Valentin (Poster Children). I’ve been a huge Poster Children fan for years and am always excited to learn of new projects from Rick. I truly think the guy’s a genius. I have a feeling he sees the world in a weird and unusual way.
If you like this song,...

EM remembers Bob Welch
Bob Welch committed suicide today. The singer and guitarist was a member of Fleetwood Mac* from 1971 to 1974 and appeared on five of the band’s records.
Welch has been quoted saying “music is disposable now. It doesn’t have the emotional impact anymore. That’s sad.”
Though I disagree that music no longer has an emotional impact, I can certainly assist in its...

W.T.Ph., Wilson Phillips - "Shadows and Light"
Wait a minute, wait a minute, WAIT A MINUTE! Are you actually telling me that Wilson Phillips has only released five studio albums? And that after their second album they split up for twelve years before releasing their third?! And their fourth release is a Christmas album, which might as well not even be included because most Christmas albums are jokes, making their discography just FOUR...

It's a shame about The Lemonheads - "It's a Shame...
Expired Music tosses out some more Aussie rock today. “It’s a Shame About Ray” is the fifth record released by The Lemonheads, though technically the band didn’t add the “The” until the following album in 1993. I don’t really have a lot to say about this record or the band. I can tell you they’ve still got five records in play, the most recent...

Ween Calls it Quits
Today Aaron Freeman announced that he’s closing the book on Ween. The news comes on the heels of the release of his solo album “Marvelous Clouds”. Ween has been my favorite band of all time for a while now, surpassing Rush sometime in the early 2000’s. Last year their album Pure Guava expired leaving me only 8 more records to enjoy.
I only had the chance to see Ween...

NEW MUSIC: Zorch - “Zut Alore”
I caught this song on KXLU a few weeks ago. It’s a weird one. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as me, but if not, try to at least make it through one complete listening. I’ve been waiting for a hard copy to land in Amoeba, but so far, nothing.

You've flatlined, Billy Ray Cyrus - Some Gave All
Can you believe it? The horrible song that is “Achey Breaky Heart” turns twenty years old today! I think we can all agree that this song has always been terrible. It’s not like “Who Let the Dogs Out” which was cool for like a week before everyone turned on it.* No, this was dreadful from its conception. And the guy singing it had a haircut that was just as...
EM salutes Donna Summer...
by reminding you 15 of her 17 studio releases have expired. Her two remaining records are a Christmas album called “Christmas Spirit” and a 2008 release called “Crayons.”
Her hit song “Hot Stuff” was released 32 days after I was born. It expired in April of ‘99.
Salida, Selena - Entre a Mi Mundo
Released May 6th, 1992 on EMI LatinWith the unfortunate recent deaths of Adam Yauch and Whitney Houston, the world is left wondering what could have been? How many more records could the Beastie Boys* have released if cancer hadn’t have been so cruel? And was Whitney’s final release “I look to you” (exp. ‘29) the beginning of a comeback?** Similarly, seventeen years...

Party off, Wayne's World Sound Track
Released Feb 18th, 1992 on Reprise“Wait up, guys! I fell on my keys!” Okay, first off I’d like to congratulate myself on making it a full year without *voluntarily* listening to music produced more than twenty years ago. For the most part, it’s been pretty easy. The only negative thing is not being able to hit shuffle on my iPod. I’ll be honest, I haven’t...

The ball's dropped on Live - "Mental Jewelry"
Released December 31st, 1991 on RadioactiveToday is the last day of 2011. Starting tomorrow, when I tell people about Expired Music, I’ll be saying how I no longer listen to music produced prior to 1992! I find this extremely exciting. Don’t you? Twenty years ago today, the band Live released their debut album “Mental Jewelry”, a twelve-track record with two singles...

NEW MUSIC: Hanni El Khatib - "Will The Guns Come...
Have you discovered this guy yet? I first heard his music on 88.9 KXLU. His first full length album hit stores in September and it’s pretty bad ass. ”Will The Guns Come Out” is a rockin’, crunchy, kill-or-be-killed record from Hanni El Khatib. Part Filipino and part Palestinian, El Khatib comes from the San Francisco area with roots planted deep within the skateboarding...

Now leaving Neverland, Michael Jackson - Dangerous
Released November 26, 1991 on EpicOnce again, I’m late to the game with Michael Jackson’s eighth studio album “Dangerous.” It expired on Saturday. I was too busy playing in a poker tournament to notice. I’ve got a handful of memories tied to this record. The first are the mind blowingly awesome spfx at the end of the Black or White video. People morphing into...
Auf Wiedersehen, U2 - Achtung, Baby
Released November 19th, 1991 on Island Records I’m a couple days late, but U2’s “Achtung, Baby” is officially in the Expired pile. One of their most successful albums, “Achtung, Baby” has gone 8 times platinum as of 2009, selling over 5.5 million copies in the States alone. ATW, they won a crapload of awards, including “Comeback of the Year” by...
Need you no more, INXS - Live Baby Live
Released November 11th, 1991 on Atlantic, Mercury Records I’ve always wanted to be on the cover of a live album. I’d say there are about ten people in this image that could properly identify themselves. How cool is that? “Live Baby Live” is one of only a few live albums I’ve ever owned. “A Show of Hands” (Exp. ‘09) and a couple of Fat Wreck Chord...

It's over, Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend
Released October 22, 1991 on Zoo Entertainment Another artist I found thanks to my sister. I seem to remember her just giving me this CD straight up one day.* Or maybe I stole it, I’m not sure. This disc got a ridiculous amount of air time in my room during high school. From beginning to end, a true classic album in my opinion. Tracks like “I thought I knew you” and “I...

Released Sept. 24th, 1991 on DGCTwenty years ago, a number of albums hit record stores for the first time, including Nirvana’s “Nevermind”, RHCP’s “Blood Sugar Sex Magic” and Tribe’s “Low End Theory.” Today they’ve expired. Sorry, Charlie. Ween - The Pod
Released on Shimmy Disc, Sept. 20, 1991As indicated on the Ween Facebook page, today is the 20th anniversary of the band’s second album, “The Pod.” It’s also the first record to expire since starting this project that I listen to on a regular basis. As I’ve mentioned before, Ween is my all time favorite band and getting rid of any of their music is a painful yet...

Released on Geffen Sept. 17th, 1991Once again, I’m a couple days late in updating, but as of Saturday Gn’R’s “Use Your Illusion I & II” have expired. I don’t have a lot to say in the record’s defense.* I’ve never been a Guns N’ Roses fan. If you’ve read any of my previous posts, you’ll know I wasn’t listening to much...
You've crapped out, Rush - Roll The Bones
Released September 3, 1991 on Anthem/AtlanticI’m a few days late, but as of Saturday Rush’s 14th studio album “Roll the Bones” has expired. My uncle introduced my cousin and I to this band when we were kids. I spent the next several years collecting their music. Every time I’d walk into a music store I’d head straight for the “R” section. I still...

Released August 20, 1991 on EpicI’m a little late getting to this, but as of a week and a half ago, Spin Doctor’s “Pocket Full of Kryptonite” has expired. The second is...
Time's run out, Pearl Jam - Ten
Released August 27, 1991 on Epic Most of the records I’ve blogged about prior to today remind me of my time in the fifth grade. Pearl Jam’s “Ten”, however, has sixth grade written all over it. I remember standing at the bus stop one morning with a girl who had just recently purchased Pearl Jam’s debut album. She yapped and yapped about it with such passion,...

Bust a move, Young MC - Brainstorm
Released August 5, 1991 on Capitol RecordsI remember being 10 years old (1990), sitting on the school bus and being asked by some kid to listen to a tape of his. He wanted me to hear a new song, Young MC’s “Fastest Rhyme.” Now, at 9 years old I liked rap. Of course, “rap” for me was just one song: MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This.” But by...
Fast like a bandaid, Ween - GodWeenSatan
Released in 1990 by Twin/Tone RecordsOooof. This one’s like taking a punch to the gut. I came to the conclusion a few years ago that Ween is my all-time favorite band. Higher on my list than Rush, higher than NoFX, higher than the 2 Skinnee J’s… They’ve taken over the #1 slot and I don’t see them being replaced any time soon. Ween is just two dudes: Gene and Dean...

Released July, 2nd 1991 on MCAI don’t like Tom Petty. There, I said it. I’ve always found him and his stupid hat* annoying. (And that’s coming from a guy with a pretty ridiculous hat of his own) I don’t know if I can really pinpoint what it is about Petty that I dislike, but I’ll try. I feel like he’s always complaining in his songs and when he sings...

Released on Lookout! July 1, 1991I discovered Green Day, along with most of the world, in 1994 when the band released their third studio album “Dookie.” (Exp. ‘14) After seeing the video for “Longview” a million times in the first week on Mtv, I bought the CD. As I mentioned in my NOFX post, say what you will about punk rock but this record played a big part in...

Released May of ‘84 on Tuff Gong/IslandIf you asked me who comes to mind when I think of reggae, I’d say Bob Marley. If you said “yeah, yeah, but besides Bob Marley, who comes to mind…” I’d say “…..er…..um………..Bobby McFeren? He’s reggae, right?” And you’d say “Yeah, sure. He counts. Anyone...
Say goodbye 2 Temple of the Dog - Temple of the...
Released on A&M, April 16, 1991Did anyone actually buy this album when it came out? I certainly didn’t. Why would I when Mtv was playing the “Say Hello 2 Heaven” video round-the-clock? According to Wikipedia, the answer is both yes and no. The record initially sold only 70,000 copies in ‘91. However, after the releases of “Badmotorfinger” (Exp. Oct....
NEW MUSIC: Boat - Dress Like Your Idols
Released on Magic Marker Records; March of ‘11The other day I heard this song “Bite My Lip” on KXLU. I arrived at work before the DJ had a chance to back announce, so the first thing I did when I got to my computer was instant message her (their AIM is kxludj) and ask for the name of the band. It turns out the band was BOAT. Another group from Seattle, BOAT has been around...
I hardly knew you, Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate...
Released on TVT records; Oct. 20, 1989I’m going on record as saying that “Pretty Hate Machine” is the first of my posts that really makes what I’m doing difficult, and it’s not because I’m a die hard NIN fan. In fact, I have never owned a NIN record. (I know them almost entirely from radio play.) The reason this stings is because, though I never purchased...
R.I.P., Michael Jackson - Thriller
Released on Epic Records; November 30, 1982I was three years old when this album came out. Four, when the video debuted. I remember not watching the video more than actually seeing it for the first time. Not only was my mom adamantly against MTV, labeling it trash, but she also hated Michael Jackson. ”Boys shouldn’t wear earrings.” The fact that it could potentially give her...
No more NOFX - Ribbed
Released on Epitaph; Exp. 03/26/11Punk Rock is a genre of music that means different things to different people. Often political and usually loud, it’s the bastard step child of music, and which bands qualify as “punk” is a debate that can sometimes result in a boot to the head. For a lot of people (senior citizens), punk rock means The Sex Pistols (Never Mind the Bollocks,...

New Music: Superhuman Happiness - Fall Down Seven...
I’ve retired a couple classics this week, so I think it’s time to make up for it by introducing a new band. I heard these guys on KXLU yesterday morning while driving to work. I didn’t catch the title of the song, but the band is called Superhuman Happiness and they pretty much kick ass. Based out of Brooklyn, Superhuman Happiness claims to ”seek joy and love through...
See ya, R.E.M. - Out of Time
Expired March 12, 2011I’ve been looking forward to this one for a couple weeks now. Not because I don’t like this album, I do, but because of the obvious jokes I can make (but won’t) about the record’s title. R.E.M.’s “Out of Time” officially expired this past weekend. Probably my favorite R.E.M. record*, OOT is known for featuring “non-traditional...
Adios, Madonna - Like A Prayer
Released March 21, 1989 on Sire/Warner Bros. This is an easy one for me. I have never ever ever been a Madonna fan. …but… if a gun was placed to my head and I had to pick a favorite M song, it would have to be “Papa Don’t Preach.” Unfortunately, that song, along with the rest of True Blue has also expired. In fact, for you Madonna/Expired Music fans playing along...
